This medicine is a vitamin
It is used for:
– Therapy of folic acid deficiency states that cannot be corrected with diet
– Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns through preventive treatment in women at increased risk (e.g. if a child was previously born with a neural tube defect or in women who suffer from seizures and being treated with antiepileptic drugs). The intake of folic acid is also indicated with a wholesome diet.
– Treatment of high levels of homocysteine in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.
The therapy of homocysteinemia exclusively with folic acid may only be carried out if a vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled out.

field of use
• This medicine is a vitamin.
• The preparation is used for:
• Therapy for folic acid deficiencies that cannot be corrected with diet.
• Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns by prophylactic treatment in women at increased risk (e.g. if a child has previously been born with a neural tube defect or in women who have seizures and are being treated with antiepileptic drugs). The intake of folic acid is also indicated with a wholesome diet.
• Treatment of elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.
• The therapy of homocysteinemia exclusively with folic acid may only be carried out if a vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled out.

Contraindications
• The drug must not be taken

• if there is anemia due to impaired development of the red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), since the increase in the number of young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid administration can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. Because of the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, before treating anemia, it must be ensured that this is not due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. The cause of megaloblastic anemia must be clarified before starting therapy.
