Ambroxol hydrochloride
Tablets 30 mg
Active ingredient: ambroxol hydrochloride 30 mg.
Excipients: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate and modified starch
Description of action
Ambroxol is an active metabolite of bromhexine. It has mucolytic and secretolytic properties, stimulates the maturation and secretion of alveolar and bronchial surfactant, increases the production of bronchial serous secretions, reduces the viscosity of mucus, and increases the mobility of cilia of the respiratory epithelium. Thanks to this, it facilitates expectoration, accelerates the clearing of residual secretions from the bronchi, reduces the intensity and frequency of the cough reflex, and normalizes sputum production.
TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE is rapidly and almost completely absorbed, its action begins after approximately 30 minutes and lasts for several hours. It is excreted in the urine in a metabolized form.
Indications for use
acute or chronic bronchitis or pneumonia,
bronchial asthma (see Warnings),
emphysema,
cystic fibrosis,
inflammation of the larynx, nose, throat and sinuses.
Contraindications
TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE tablets are not prescribed to patients with hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the drug.
Warnings
Use with caution in patients with diagnosed gastric or duodenal ulcers. For people with renal impairment, the recommended dose should be reduced. TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE, used as an adjuvant in patients with bronchial asthma, may initially worsen the cough and cause excessive expectoration. Elderly people can use TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE according to the general rules.
TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE can be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary and on the express recommendation of a doctor. The drug penetrates into the milk of nursing mothers. There are no known cases of adverse effects of the drug on a child when taken in recommended therapeutic doses.
Taking TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE does not have a negative impact on the ability to drive vehicles or operate moving equipment.
Interactions:
The simultaneous use of antitussive drugs can reduce mucus secretion and cause secretion accumulation by inhibiting the cough reflex. TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE, when used with certain antibiotics (amoxicillin, erythromycin, ampicillin, doxycycline and cefuroxime), increases their penetration into the lung parenchyma and enhances their effect. Ambroxol and theophylline enhance each other’s effects. The drug does not interact with other drugs, including those used to treat bronchial diseases, cardiac glycosides and diuretics.
Dosage and method of administration
TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE tablets are prescribed orally. Adults and children over 12 years of age usually take 30 mg (1 tablet) three times a day. For long-term therapy, the dose is reduced to two tablets per day.
Children aged 6–12 years are prescribed half the adult dose, i.e. 15 mg (1/2 tablet) three times a day, and with long-term use – half a tablet twice a day. TUSSAL® EXPECTORANCE tablets should be taken after meals with a small amount of liquid, and should not be used immediately before bedtime. Overdose Cases
overdose:
Ambroxol has not yet been registered. If symptoms indicating an overdose of the drug occur, symptomatic treatment should be prescribed.
Side effects
Ambroxol is well tolerated. Occasionally, allergic skin reactions, facial swelling, headache, painful urination, dry airways and dry mouth, or gastrointestinal problems such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation may occur.
