Acid reflux, heartburn… These are two typical manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is when some of the acidic contents of the stomach return to the esophagus. The stomach is covered with mucus, which protects it from acidity, but the esophagus is not protected: in the case of acid reflux, the sensations will be the most unpleasant.
What are the symptoms?
Pyrosis: a burning sensation in the chest that occurs immediately after eating or in certain positions: bending forward (while tying shoelaces or washing the floor) or lying down, especially at night.
Regurgitation: stomach contents (acids, food) rise into the throat without nausea or vomiting.
