Additional intake of folic acid* increases the level of folic acid in women. Low folic acid status in pregnant women increases the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
Folic acid promotes the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy.
*For women of childbearing age, the beneficial effect is achieved with an additional daily intake of 400 mcg of folic acid for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
