Lactulose is broken down in the colon into lactic, formic and acetic acids and carbon dioxide. These acids reduce the pH in the colon from 7 to 5 – 5.5 and have a local osmotic effect, causing water retention in the colon. In patients with hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose reduces ammonia toxicity. The acids formed as a result of the breakdown of lactulose lower the pH and affect the conversion of ammonia into non-absorbable and non-toxic ammonium ions, which leads to their retention in the colon and a decrease in the concentration of ammonia in the blood.
Application: Adults:
initial dose (first 3 days): 45 ml of syrup per day 1 time before breakfast or 15 ml of syrup 3 times a day before meals.
