Rauwolfia serpentina grows wild on the Indian Peninsula at the foot of the Himalayas and in Java and Sumatra. It appears in ancient Indian texts around 600 AD. BC under the name Saropagandha. Tea, brewed from the whole plant, has been used in India for centuries to treat hysteria, anxiety and heart problems. The plant contains about 25 alkaloids, the most important of which is reserpine – a strong blood pressure lowering agent.
