Miscellaneous
– Before the planned use of iodine and iodine-containing preparations, it should be checked whether there is an overactive thyroid gland or a nodular goiter. This applies above all to adults and before a planned iodine treatment, since in this situation the possibility of causing an overactive thyroid gland must be taken into account. If there is any suspicion, further diagnostics are indicated.
– The administration of iodine (especially in high doses) or medicines containing iodine can make a planned treatment of hyperthyroidism, hormone-producing thyroid tumors and malignant thyroid tumors impossible.
– If a malignant thyroid tumor is suspected, iodine should be avoided in any form.
– In addition, the administration of high doses of iodine can affect the thyroid examination and lead to errors in the case of a corresponding predisposition. This is especially true for thyroid metabolism studies and iodine metabolism studies.
