Vitamin B12 is essential for the production of red blood cells and optimal functioning of the nerves and brain. Vitamin B12 must be bound to “intrinsic factor” in order for it to be absorbed by the body. Intrinsic factor is produced in the stomach. When part of the stomach is removed and/or part of the small intestine is bypassed, intrinsic factor is produced with difficulty or not at all, and vitamin B12 is poorly or not absorbed.
