What is nasopharyngitis?
Nasopharyngitis, commonly known as the common cold, is a mild viral infection of the mucous membrane lining the inside of the nose (nasal cavity) and throat (located behind the nasal cavity).
The nasal mucosa usually secretes a small amount of fluid, the role of which is to constantly humidify the inhaled air and fight infectious agents.
When infected with a virus, this mucous membrane becomes swollen, irritated and produces large amounts of secretion, so that the nose becomes “stuffy” or “running”.
The pharyngeal mucosa is also a site of inflammation, accompanied by redness, swelling and pain.
