Nail fungus, also known medically as onychomycosis, is usually caused by dermatophytes. Transmission occurs either directly from person to person or via shared objects (e.g. towels).
Common places of infection are places where many people walk barefoot, for example in the swimming pool, in the sauna, in the shower at the gym. The infection is promoted by a warm, humid climate, which occurs due to inadequate drying of the feet or foot sweat.
