The hard, dark seeds of milk thistle are ground and used to make a tea or tincture, encapsulated, or added to foods. The whole seeds are also sometimes added to foods. The seeds have a slightly bitter, oily taste and a faint aroma.
Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical name: Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.
HIGH QUALITY MILK THISTLE SEEDS – Frontier Co-op Organic Milk Thistle Seed has long been used both as a food and for its wellness benefits. The nutty-tasting seeds can be used in many different ways. Our loose milk thistle seeds are certified kosher and non-irradiated.
LIVER HEALTH – The liver works to rid the body of harmful substances and toxins. The seeds have long been associated with wellness benefits, and modern research has confirmed most of these historical uses. Milk thistle seeds support a healthy liver and have historically been used as a liver tonic and in various digestive preparations.
VERSATILE USES – Milk thistle seeds can be consumed in a variety of ways – as tea, in capsules, as a tincture and of course in foods. Use the whole seed to sprinkle over salads and sandwiches and mix with trail mix, or lightly grind the seed to mix into tea, baked goods and smoothies.
ORIGIN/ORIGIN – Milk thistle seeds have been used as food for centuries and have a long tradition in herbalism. The seeds come from Bulgaria and are harvested from the milk thistle seed pods once they are ripe and dried. The milk thistle plant itself can grow up to 4-5 feet tall and has lettuce-like leaves with spiky purple flowers.
ABOUT US – Owned by the businesses and organizations that buy and sell our products, Frontier Co-op has been a member-owned cooperative since 1976. We support a natural lifestyle, which is why our products are never irradiated or treated with ethylene oxide (ETO). We are committed to the health and well-being of the environment and everyone who produces and consumes our plant-based products.
Recommended use
Grind milk thistle seeds in a coffee or spice grinder and add the ground seeds to shakes or muesli. Or place the ground seeds into capsules if preferred. To make milk thistle tea, add a cup of boiling water to a teaspoon of ground seeds and let steep for 15 minutes.
The ground seeds can also be prepared as a tincture using a menstruum of 50% alcohol and 50% water (or 100 proof vodka).
The whole seeds can be roasted and added to salads, breads and cereals.
Milk thistle seeds have been extensively studied for their protective effects on the liver. While formulations containing concentrated amounts of silymarin (70 to 80%) are being researched as a treatment for various liver problems (particularly in Europe), the whole seed, with much lower amounts of silymarin, is used as a liver tonic to “promote healthy liver function ” and a general sense of well-being. Chronic drug and alcohol addicts also use milk thistle as a supportive plant.
